As an oncology-trained massage therapist, I am able to recognize and safely work within a framework of clinical considerations to provide a safe, satisfying and therapeutic oncology massage treatment.
These considerations are different for each person, and during active treatment and recent recovery, can for the same person, regularly change. By observing essential and fundamental Standards of Practice , I can work to ensure your massage is safe while still being effective.
Your massage session will be modified based on YOUR needs on the day of your session. Modifications will be made for things such as surgery sites, fragile or sensitive skin, bone integrity, vital organ involvement, late effects of treatment, compromised blood cell counts and lymph nodes, fatigue, nausea and/or flu-like symptoms. Modifications may include:
Following the fundamental Standards of Practice for oncology massage, the pressure of your massage will vary from a stationary, weightless hold, light and gentle or medium "every day" massage pressure. During active treatment and recent recovery phase, the applied pressure of your massage will never go beyond a medium pressure (3 out of 5 scale) so as not to furter tax your already burdened immune system.
I will follow-up with you 24-48 hours after your session to see how your feeling. Any flu-like symptoms in the days following your massage may be an indicator of an inflammatory immune response and will require further modifications in the key considerations (position, pressure, pace, site, product) at your next session.
The following will need to be completed prior to your first session:
A link to the forms will be sent to you after you schedule your appointment so that you can complete them online. If you would prefer to have them emailed so that you can print them, please let me know. You can also click the button at the bottom of the page
The first visit for all new oncology massage clients is approximately 75 minutes in length and will include a comprehensive intake where we will discuss your medical history, current health concerns and your goals for the session. Then together we will come up with a treatment plan. The intake will be followed by a massage session of around 60 minutes in length.
